Happy Birthday Andy! Forever an inspiration to me. His biography by Bob Colacello and his diaries were the driving forces to get me out of my small town and head to New York City.
Once When I Was first living in NYC I carried around a hand-written list in my wallet of places & addresses that he mentioned in his diaries and when I was in a new neighborhood I would scan my list to see if there was any place nearby that was mentioned. Some places I found were his Factory in Union Square (which I later went inside when it became the Ben Sherman showrooms) and the spot where he would buy his cookie jar collections and where the old Max’s Kansas City was located.
Everything about this photograph is perfection — the old glass and styrofoam bottle of Coke, the plate full of on-set catered garbage lunch, the composed expression of cognitive dissonance from a beautiful actress who is horrified that her picture is being taken while she’s eating and yet still reverent that it’s Andy Warhol behind the camera. And of course, “nuke the valley.”
Goddamn, how perfect is that t-shirt.
