#Throwback Thursdays : Bloomingdales Edition
As you may have noticed from the recent #dayinthelife posts I am working on a Bloomingdale’s job. While I can’t divulge any details about the shoots (you will have to wait until October) I can say there is a great musician involved, a wonderful cause and of course, amazing fashion.
What I can share is some old images from a shoot I did for Bloomingdale’s where we shot baby-doll dresses in a recycling plant. Weird, I know!
Why would you throw out Thriller?!?
This was straight up mean of us to do to her. Did I mention it was freezing?
How funny is this? I give how to tips on the best 80’s costumes.
Happy Birthday MTV!
I remember watching MTV when it first started. A bunch of us would go to a friend’s apartment to watch it. We didn’t have cable yet. It was the brown cable boxes connected to a cord to the tv that had all these 3 rows of buttons and a flip switch.
It began my love affair with Billy Idol, Sting & Simon LeBon. Video did kill the radio star; all my first crushes developed from that channel. Rick Springfield on GH & MTV, double score. I quickly quit referencing Punky Brewster and claimed Cyndi Lauper as my influence for wearing as many colors as possible at once. David Bowie confused me and my Mom LOVED him. Queen sang about bicycles so I had to learn how to ride one. I named one of my kittens Lucky Star. I watched Thriller premiere at a roller skating party. I wished my phone number was 867-5309. I needed to get to NYC. J.Geils Bands, Van Halen & Motley Crue convinced me being a bad girl was the way to go. Later on I would race home to watch Yo MTV Raps and stay up recording 120 Minutes.
I wanted my MTV.
Years later, my first summer living in New York City, I got lucky enough to got to the MTV Video Awards & after party that was in Bryant Park. It wasn’t the best year for performances. All I really remember being excited about was Smashing Pumpkins and Metallica. Later at the after party where my boyfriend at the time & I gawked at being around so many famous musicians at once we decided to split up and search for who we wanted to meet.
I geeked out by standing next to Courtney Love and Melissa auf Der Maur while waiting for a drink. But my true high point of the evening happened when MCA strolled over and chatted me up. To say I was a Beastie Boys fan was an understatement. I died and as I was stuttering a clever response Chris Rock and an entourage of 20 walked in between us and MCA was carried off with the crowd.
Over the years, I got to work backstage styling artists at the VMA’s and attend a couple more times. One time I was racing back from the dressing room to side stage through Radio City and slammed right into Paul McCartney. What?! Oh my god, did that just happen? Hurry up and get the topstick to Ms. Hill.
But nothing ever compared to that first after party. The music industry was flush then, music video was a big deal and MTV really mattered in terms of making or breaking an artist.
Happy BIRTHDAY MTV!!!
